We're excited to announce a new integration between Fieldwire and BoxLock — one that helps construction teams bring more visibility and accountability to the Lockout Tagout (LOTO) process.

By integrating BoxLock’s connected lock technology with Fieldwire’s field task management system, it is easier to digitize and automate a critical safety procedure. Here’s everything you need to know about what this means for your jobsite.

What is Lockout Tagout (LOTO)?

Lockout Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure used to make sure dangerous machines are properly shut off and can’t be started up again before maintenance or repair work is complete. LOTO procedures involve:

  • Locking out equipment with a physical device, like a padlock
  • Tagging out the lock with a label that includes information about the person performing the lockout and the reason why

This process protects workers from the sudden startup of machinery, which can cause serious injuries or even death.

For general contractors, electrical contractors, and field supervisors, LOTO is a must-have part of any serious safety plan. But the way LOTO is done today? It’s often manual, slow, and hard to track.

What’s broken with the LOTO process today?

Most construction teams rely on manual checklists, paper tags, and handwritten notes to manage the Lockout Tagout process. These systems are:

  • Hard to audit — there's no easy way to confirm who locked out what, and when
  • Not always visible — workers in the field may not know the status of a lockout until they walk up to the machine
  • Time-consuming — field supervisors spend hours tracking down lock info, making phone calls, and updating spreadsheets
  • Prone to error — handwritten tags can be damaged, misplaced, or misread

For jobsites with multiple subcontractors and moving timelines, it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks—and in safety, those cracks can be dangerous.

That’s where Fieldwire and BoxLock come in.

What is BoxLock?

BoxLock is a company that builds smart padlocks and access control solutions designed for high-security environments like logistics, supply chains, and now, construction.

Their core product is a connected padlock that can:

  • Record lock/unlock activity in real time
  • Be assigned to specific users
  • Sync data to cloud-based systems

BoxLock’s system replaces manual locks and tags with a digital trail, making it easy to track who has locked or unlocked a piece of equipment—and when.

For construction teams, this means better safety, stronger accountability, and real-time visibility into equipment status.

How the BoxLock and integration Fieldwire work

With this new integration, BoxLock’s smart lock data can now sync directly with Tasks inside Fieldwire.

Here’s how the process works:

1. Locking out equipment with BoxLock: A worker installs a BoxLock on equipment that needs to be locked out for maintenance or safety. The lock is assigned to that worker and logs the timestamp automatically.

2. Task updates in Fieldwire: The lock’s activity is automatically linked to a Fieldwire Task that tracks the status of the equipment. The Task shows when the lock was applied, who locked it, and whether it’s still active.

3. Real-time visibility for field teams: Anyone with access to the Fieldwire project can instantly see the lock status without needing to be on site.

4. Digital audit trail: Fieldwire stores a full history of all LOTO-related actions, making it easier to review safety practices and pass audits.

Why this matters for the field

If you work in construction, you already know that safety processes only work if they’re easy to follow. That’s why this integration is a big step forward.

With this integration:

  • Superintendents can quickly confirm equipment is locked out before greenlighting work
  • Safety managers get a reliable, digital record of every lock and unlock
  • Contractors can see lock status inside the same app they use for daily field tasks

This isn’t just about digitizing a form—it’s about making one of the most critical safety procedures on your jobsite simpler, faster, and more reliable.

The future of jobsite safety is connected

At Fieldwire, we’re focused on helping construction teams work safer and smarter. This integration with BoxLock is one of many ways we’re building tools that bring real-time data to the field, improve communication, and streamline essential processes.

The Lockout Tagout process might seem simple—but getting it right, every time, is what keeps workers safe and projects moving forward.
